Radio voice communications in aviation are known as radio telephony (abbreviated as R/T); hence the name of the licence you obtain in the course of your pilot training is theflight radiotelephone operator licence (FROL). To be a competent radio operator, some knowledge of radio theory is essential, even if that knowledge is only very basic. The intent of this chapter is to introduce radio in very simple terms, yet suffcient for you to become an effcient flight radio operator.

This chapter will be particularly useful to pilots operating in more remote areas of Australia where long-range, high-frequency communications may be utilised.
